Seasonal Tips: Spring Cleaning

As winter comes to a close, there are opportunities to shake off the cold and start fresh! This means taking advantage of the improving Spring weather to tackle some cleaning and organization in your home beyond the regular routines.

Window Cleaning
Give your windows a good clearing and cleaning. With increasing sunlight, clean windows can be an excellent step in brightening up your home. But, it is best to clean windows on cloudy days so the cleaner doesn’t dry up too fast. Plain water and a microfiber cloth is sometimes enough to get a streak free clean.

Doorways
Many people forget their doorways as a spot to clean. If your home has sliding doors, scrubbing the tracks with an old toothbrush, vacuuming, and finishing off with a wet sponge can clear them right up. Cleaning in the hinges and other hidden spots is a great idea every once in a while for other doors. Don’t forget to dust on the door frames!
Forgotten surfaces and spaces
Sometimes there are places in our homes that we forget need cleaned. Baseboards, corners, under furniture, in drawers, cabinets, and under/inside appliances are a few places you may forget in your regular cleanings.

Dusting
Spring often increases pollen, and winter sometimes means more dust accrues. It is a perfect time to dust off light fixtures, vents, and hard to reach corners of your home.

Re-Organization
It can be a good time of year to sort through and reorganize your belongings, especially in closets, kitchens, and bathrooms. Decide new places that make more sense, reorganize, and if necessary, find new homes for things. If you are throwing some things away, follow the disposal guidelines for where you live.

Mind the Mud
Rainy weather and wanting to be outside more means mud is a more common concern. A new mat for inside your door may help if you don’t have one.

Local Area Guide

Pittsburgh has many Parks and Gardens that are good ways to take advantage of the natural beauty of the city and Southwestern Pennsylvania. Many of them hold outdoor and indoor events throughout the year. Here are just a few of the local opportunities.

Parks
Kennard Park: Located on Reed and Kirkpatrick Streets, there is a playground with a spray feature, basketball courts, a tennis court, field football, baseball, and soccer.
Schenley Park: Located between Oakland and Squirrel Hill, this park is 456 acres of attractions. A golf course, Schenley Oval Sportsplex, Disc Golf Course, and public art exhibitions are all here. Not to mention playgrounds and shelters for the whole family.
South Shore Riverfront: Formerly a steel mill barge dock, this park is a beautiful spot along the Monongahela River. Part of the Three Rivers Heritage Trail, it is a great spot for biking, walking, river access, and public events
Allegheny Commons: Called Pittsburgh’s Oldest Park, it has been a landmark of the North Side for over 150 years. It is a great spot for biking, court and field sports, and walking. It also has a pool, a dog park, Lake Elizabeth, public art, and the National Aviary.
Oak Hill Outdoor Spots: Don’t forget the playgrounds and other green spaces around Oak Hill. We’re also excited for pool season this Summer!

Gardens
Pittsburgh Botanic Garden: Opened to the public in 2015, this 60 acre garden sits on the site of lands formerly damaged by poor forestry and mining practices. Sights include a pond surrounded by cherry trees, a restored log house, and a rotating garden with seasonal plants.
Phipps Conservatory: Since 1893, Phipps Conservatory and Botanic Gardens has been a great place to admire the beauty of plant life from the middle of the city. Phipps has many events planned for spring, including tours, classes, and events.
Carrie Blast Furnaces National Historic Landmark: This landmark combines Pittsburgh’s Industrial history with art and nature.
